Fat Quarter Shuffle Quilt

Cluck Cluck Sew's Fat Quarter Shuffle

In the depths of the pandemic and in the midst of a move, I dusted off a box of vintage fat quarters with the goal of making a quick and easy quilt.

A casual dig through my pattern collection unearthed Cluck Cluck Sew’s Fat Quarter Shuffle Quilt pattern. This pattern is the perfect stash buster. With 16 fat quarters and a few hours of time, I found myself with a finished throw size quilt and get this, NO SCRAPS. The pattern uses every precious bit of fabric and features both large and small cuts of fabric which really makes it ideal for those long hoarded special fabrics that we all have, regardless of scale.

The fabrics I chose for this were mostly classic Cotton & Steel. Fabrics from their initial launch back when Melody Miller, Rashida Coleman-Hale, Alexia Marcelle Abegg, Kimberly Kight and Sarah Watts were all beginning to work their magic on the fabric industry. I also sprinkled in a few cherished Lizzy House and Tula Pink prints to balance the palette. These are fabrics I’ve hoarded for years and years. They were always too precious to use for any old project so they just watched me from their shelf until I worked up the courage to dive in. I’m so glad to have finally cut them up. There’s so much more magic in them after you can snuggle underneath them.

I quilted my flimsy on the longarm with some neon orange thread in my favourite go-to pantograph, Malachite. I sized it up to keep the quilting loose enough to retain the softness of the quilt. This pantograph is so massive that it’s really fun to watch it stitch out and it gives quilts such a beautiful and simple texture. The intensity of the neon thread perfectly complements the energy of the quilt with all the different prints and textures. I love it so much, I keep trying to figure out how to make neon work for all of my quilts. LOL.
